Sort Of<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While I haven't made any tack in a long time, this month I have been easing myself back into art in general. Perhaps it isn't the healthiest coping method (cleaning up the house to get it ready to sell would be better...), but it's helping me take my mind off things.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'll be the first to admit that I'm quite poor at drawing, and I really don't need the stress of trying to improve right now. I need a way to relax. So, I've started collecting free-to-use line drawings from the internet and colouring them.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My first piece is based off of lines by VendettaImaging on dA.

I recommend checking out the full size image!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I decided to create a loose interpretation of EEC Unsung Hero (a Breyer Keltec Salinero), and then gifted the design to my one friend who is into the Horse Art RPG scene. Hopefully she enjoys her new virtual pony!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm not going to lie though, this dude was a lot of work! First of all, the original drawing was at a much smaller resolution than I was wanting to work with, so I had to enlarge it quite a bit - which of course involved carefully redrawing all the lines to clean them up x_X After that, work went slowly and smoothly, carefully building up the base colour variations and adding layer after layer of details on top.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For the most part, I'm satisfied with this piece. It served it's purpose of giving me something to do to relax. But (and there's always a but!) I wanted to give myself a bit more of a challenge.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, up next is this heartthrob, created from lines by Hardandhind on dA.

Please check out the full size image, I have a lot of detail!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This boy took several days, but I think he turned out really great! His start was much of the same - enlarging the original drawing, redrawing new crisp lines, and then meticulously refining everything to look smooth and intentional. Everything after that was a LOT of work! From the roaning at the edges of his white markings, to the individually painted hairs of his mane and tail, I allowed myself to get lost in the process.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...Now that I think about it, this sort of thing would be good for creating mock-ups of how I would like my 2 resins to be painted. Although, that might be putting the cart before the horse, as I don't even know of any artists who are actually accepting commission pieces.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03794265772089061033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8504285566515789436.post-13777590829402119702017-08-31T16:00:00.000-07:002017-08-31T16:00:05.245-07:00Baby Steps<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While it's nothing big, I made something:
This halter lacks a few of my usual touches - the buckle on the crown lacks a tongue (leading to a crown strap without any holes), and there is no buckle on the chin. Still, it looks neat and clean, with the blue complementing Comanche's chestnut coat nicely. Most importantly it felt good to make something physical.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Maybe on Saturday I'll feel up to making something fancier, but for now...This is good. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03794265772089061033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8504285566515789436.post-21054492154369792152017-08-30T15:00:00.000-07:002017-08-30T15:00:15.048-07:00Looking Back, Moving Forward<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To say the last few months have been difficult would be a severe overstatement.
At first I was feeling burnt out from going full-tilt at tack- and prop-making, then school got in the way, then depression...

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...And then at the end of April my mom was in a car accident.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She is a diabetic, and her blood sugar suddenly dropped for unknown reasons. All I know was that she was found driving recklessly down the back roads by a police officer, and rolled the van 6 times right in front of him. I thought I had lost her.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She was in the hospital for a while, but came out of things almost completely unharmed - just very sore and suffering from a severe concussion. So, a lot of my time was spent looking after her and just generally keeping her safe. Things were going well, but with her health being already poor, there was no way attending Breyerfest would be feasible.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...And then, at the end of July, she had a fatal heart attack.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There's no need to go into details now, but, I held her in her final moments. I just hope she's at peace now.
While I may not be the best at starting my own projects, I often find myself adding to the projects of others. Today's work was inspired by Desktop Stables and my complete and utter obsession with more, more, more!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So here I sit, flitting between Photoshop and Google image search, making up even more labels for grooming supplies.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> This is all I have to show for it at the moment, as I had to make everything from scratch. It's been a while since I did such a thing (most of my feedbag files have been sitting on my computer, untouched for just over a year now), but it feels good to put so much detail into something that I don't have to draw!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now to just figure out what products to tackle next! Some Mane N Tail Mineral Ice to sooth sore joints? Tuff Stuff to keep the herd's hooves in prime condition? Maybe even some sheath cleaner? (Hey, I do have several studs and geldings!) I should also make some saddle soap containers, as well as lots and lots of treats...
Last weekend was a whirlwind of events. In addition to my show on Saturday, something very special happened on Sunday! As I have mentioned before, my best friend breeds Quarter Horses and Paints, but the first of this year's crop has been born.
The night before, I was up until nearly midnight, slaving away on my first Western Pleasure set...Yet it still had at least 4 hours of work that needed to go into it. Did I mention that I needed to be up at 5am? Needless to say, the idea of showing in novice performance was abandoned entirely, as there was still tack that needed to be made in addition to the WP set. So, I stumbled off to bed.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The morning before the show went smoothly. Everyone was packed up, and no items were forgotten. There is a distinct possibility that this may be a first in model horse showing history, haha! In the days before the show, each individual model was given their own carefully crafted documentation, tucked away in a binder. If there is anything I have learned from my years of reading Jennifer's blog, document everything!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Driving to the show was expected to be a 2 hour highway slog, but encountering a nasty accident left traffic at a complete standstill for 20+ minutes. I have no idea what happened, but I hope everyone survived. Minor accidents are horrific enough.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Eventually I arrived at the show hall with my meager spread of common models. I didn't want to overwhelm myself by bringing too many horses, but I couldn't help but feel inadequate compared to the other tables. All were filled, and with a good number of drool-worthy pieces. Suffering from a bad case of pony-envy, I laid out my horses.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

I honestly didn't take many pictures, and out of the ones that I took, only 3 were really presentable. Whoops! I was too busy pacing and attempting to do something that resembles socializing, which (spoiler alert) I am extremely bad at.

I did well enough at keeping track of my classes, and didn't miss a single one. It probably helped that I only brought 8 horses, and also made a copy of the class list that I added the names of my entrants to. If only this level of organization extended to all areas of my life!

Out of everyone who came along, only half were in the ribbons. This wasn't really a surprise as I don't have and exceptional models. However, I do own a Thunderstorm that had won a NAN card at Breyerfest the year she was released. She is exceptional, and I was expecting big things from her. What I wasn't expecting, however, was this...

Keltic Salinero (Unsung Hero), posing with his ribbon and NAN card

My first, well, first! And in a positively massive Warmblood/Sport class, too! This was particularly noteworthy, as all my other models that had been on the table previously were either awarded 6th, or were out of the ribbons entirely. Yes, even my Arabian that I had placed so much hope in. But, I suppose the hero's song is being sung now, after all!
Whoops.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So, I spent part of the weekend drafting up a pattern for a Western gaming pad. The first 2 iterations didn't really turn out, but I'm quite pleased with these ones. While I have not attached wear leathers yet, they are otherwise finished.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> My first acceptable pad is purple, and unfortunately does not photograph well by any means. In pictures, it comes off as blue and iridescent, but it's really just a marbled darker purple. The square stitching in the middle is also a little off center and too low on one side, so...boo. This will only really work under a larger saddle or in photos.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> While my blog has fallen silent, I have managed to keep myself busy with things other than school. Recently I found a package of fine nylon rope, about 1mm thick, in several colours on spools. While I have tried making rope halters in the past, the material I used was a touch too thick and out of scale.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The package I bought had 9 colours: black, white, grey, brown, purple, royal blue, turquoise, peach, pink, and yellow. But...no lime green! How sad. But at least I can practice my knot tying.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I realize this isn't exactly the ideal setup for real horses, but I think this would work just fine for endurance or a light trail ride. There are other configurations with the rings attached to the rear knots, which are then connected to a nylon strap (flat or braided) that buckles to the bit.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> This piece of headgear has a sprinkle of added personality, featuring a nice heart knot for the removable browband.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">But at the end of the day, sometimes a simple classic does the job... (With added noseband knots for the horse that is the one with personality!)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03794265772089061033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8504285566515789436.post-5021091932541886492016-02-25T10:23:00.001-08:002016-02-25T10:23:25.781-08:00It's Barn Time!<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I too have been bitten by the barn bug, and have an embarrassingly large collection of Breyer barns stashed away in my mother's attic. I have dreams of eventually being wealthy enough to live in a house where I can set up a large farm diorama, with several barns and paddocks for prime photography realism. However, I really don't see this happening. So, I think I am going to pick my favourite barns to keep, while customizing the others and selling them (perhaps at Breyerfest 2017).
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I plan on customizing the keepers, too - while "OF" Breyer barns have a distinct charm to them, there is just something about a carefully stained, painted and decorated scale barn that sets my heart aflutter. I don't have any pictures of my first project, as I have not made much headway, but I am slowly making progress on my weekends spent at home. My "victim" is a single stall barn with a sliding door by either Maxim Stables or Groton. The quality is very much on par with the Breyer barns, and it takes up less space than a barn with multiple stalls. Plus, what is not to love about a barn with both sliding doors and barred (as opposed to fully open) windows?
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The only work I have been able to accomplish is a lot of sanding and oiling of the internal support structures and crossbeams. I am going to leave these the natural wood colour. I have also done some sanding and painting to the internal walls, making them a smooth white, but leaving the bottom panels bare. The plan? Padded walls. A bit ambitious perhaps, but I imagine this little stable being used as an isolated stall for medical reasons, or perhaps an additional foaling stable. Either way, comfort is paramount, meaning I need to get myself some blue yoga mat scraps from a local fabric store, as well as some black craft foam for the floor matting. If I feel really motivated I might even add a floor drain.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So, there is a lot of work to still be done for the interior, and I am still waffling over the outside. And let's not even start discussing the details and decorations, like stall toys and feed/water/hay setups.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">But, I'm doing something other than staring at MH$P or watching video game related youtube videos. This is good.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03794265772089061033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8504285566515789436.post-41727814316966777002016-02-08T17:09:00.001-08:002016-02-08T17:09:06.951-08:00I'm not dead!Just in case any rumours had been circulating in my absence, I assure you that I am still around and doing model horse stuff. It's just that in late November some things happened, leaving me in a place without much passion to blog. Then school started up again, and I'm sure many of you know what the college experience is like...Only instead of partying and staying up too late, I sit in my darkened room and do homework, never letting the pure unfiltered sunlight touch my skin.

Oh yeah. I'm taking a creative writing course. Not sure how that might change things.

But really, I have some posts that I've been wanting to put together for a while, but I simply wasn't in a good mental place. Now that things are doing better though, I will certainly have some photos to post at least.
I simply do not have the desk space needed for by belongings, course required materials as well as hobby materials like a sewing machine or a setup for leather work. However, there are still a few things I can do while I am here which is what I am hoping to show today.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One thing I did make room for is a desk buddy though. I'm sure many of you have ponies in your workspace, but with being away from home, I made the decision to only bring along one equine companion. I want to apologize in advance for the horribly grainy pictures. I am still experimenting with creating a setup with my crummy iPhone. At least there's a backdrop!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Another thing I love doing is making miniature versions of objects using paper and cardstock. While I have seen many fairly good looking feed bags, many of these are accomplished by finding a picture on Google and putting it on a similarly coloured background. While this can work just fine, some companies don't have images on their website that are a high enough quality, or simply feature a digital render of the entire bag!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So, I set about making a recreation of the bag with Photoshop. This means that I could easily control the image resolution, and it is simple to change the text and colours to make the different kinds of feed. I may put up some PDF files for download if anyone is interested, but right now my files lack most cutting and fold lines.
As a child, I was lucky enough to take riding lessons for a total of 7 years at the same beautiful barn. It was an incredible facility with both indoor and outdoor arenas, but still maintained a "homey" feel. I don't have any surviving pictures of these years, but all of the horses and ponies I knew there are fondly remembered.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now, my horsey life involves trips to my best friend's farm, where she breeds registered Paints with her mother. While their barn isn't as crisp and fancy as the stables I spent so many evenings at, the farm is well-kept and all the horses have wonderful manners. I savour any time spent here, and I never shy away at a chance to help out. Besides, what horse crazy would turn down the opportunity to muck stalls in near -40C weather? (Which, weirdly enough, is apparently -40F)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This time I only have 4 pictures, but I promise come Christmas I will deliver many more photos of these sweethearts!
While Commanche is technically a registered Paint, he has no white markings other than a star. At risk of irritating horse breed purists out there, I will admit that I often refer to him as a quarter horse, just to make conversations flow more smoothly when describing him. Commanche also has a very playful and gentle disposition, and has both quietly <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">allowed toddlers to ride on his back<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> as well as competing and cleaning up in <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">several Hunter<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">/Jumper sho<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ws.
While he is still very green to ride, this stud muffin has impeccable ground manners, and adores a good snuggle. He is stupidly good looking, and is best friends with Lily. Even though my best friend's mother has attempted to breed them for a good TBxQH, Lily was just not interested. They are simply happy to be turned out together to graze.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An ex-halter horse, this senior mare is incredibly flashy! Several years ago she was obtained from an owner who could not properly care for her. A little grumpy at first, Lacey has opened up in the last year and has proven to be just as sweet and quirky as the rest of the crew. She is a wonderful trail horse, and will happily have her work rewarded with her favourite treat - some banana!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are a couple more horses that need to be introduced but that will have to be saved for another day. If any of you are interested in tales of these guys, I will happily deliver. As with any animal, they all have their individual personalities, and often get up to some amusing hijinks!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03794265772089061033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8504285566515789436.post-4338388601660587162015-11-19T20:04:00.001-08:002015-11-19T20:04:54.637-08:00A Taste Of Some Breyer Barns

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One of my favourite model horse "props" are some of the largest - the Breyer barns themselves! I have multiple, too many to number comfortably on this blog without embarassment, but it is a near insatiable love. Unfortunately, most of my barns are in an OF state or are minimally customized, but on my Christmas break from college I am hoping to at least paint up one of my barns.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This opens up a whole slew of decisions, much like when one is deciding to paint a horse. My personal favourite colour scheme for barns is not the classic red, but the timeless pairing of Cape Cod blue and an aged white. However I am left with figuring out what to do with the interior of the barns. I usually would just go with white, but real life horses are very dirty creatures! So, do I just pretend that if it were to exist as a real establishment that it is cleaned incessantly, or do I just go the easy route and leave the wood natural? I may at least see about oiling it...Hm.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Anyways, I wanted to present a couple photos that have been rotting away on my iPhone, one more recent than the other. I do want to apologize in advance for my poor photography in these ones, it's a lot easier to make outdoor pictures look good!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> In the summers of 2013 and 2014, I visited a friend-of-the-family's cottage in Grand Bend, Ontario.
